Overview

Job Summary:

The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Movement Disorder Clinical Manager has dual responsibilities of  program leadership and clinical practice.  

  1. The DBS and Movement Disorder program manager component of the role is responsible for providing  leadership, expertise, collaboration, consultation and mentorship for the team responsible for promoting  evidence-based care of the deep brain stimulation and movement disorder patient population. The DBS  and Movement Disorder Clinical Manager supports organizational goals and works with the Chief of  Neurosurgery, Clinical Neurophysiologist, and the interdisciplinary clinical team to achieve optimal  standards of care with measurable identified outcomes.  
  2. The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) component of the role is a clinical expert and patient advocate.  This position manages a group of clinically complex or resource intensive patients. The APN is  responsible for collaboration with the care team in the post-operative management of the implanted DBS  systems, working with Neurologists and Neurophysiologist to adjust the DBS contact configurations and  stimulating parameters, to optimize symptom benefit and minimize side effects. The APN provides clinical care to patients impacted by movement disorders and neurologic conditions. Performs the role of  advanced practice nurse through clinical practice, education, research and consultation with  multidisciplinary groups utilizing a holistic approach to wellness. 
  3. The clinical program manager is focused on service line leadership to the OR based on the summary  comments and promotes best practice related to an area such as neuroscience and ensure appropriate  competency of team members. This requires subspecialty knowledge and education to staff only and  coordinates one consistent area. 
  4. The Movement & DBS position is asking someone to build an entire new subspecialty service line and  manage the infrastructure, community outreach, and education to the nursing department and OR. This  individual needs to build out protocols for the subspecialty service line, see patients, assist in hiring and  managing a team that leads to offering a new service, provide OR support for new procedures, provide  education to the nursing floor and OR teams, manage post op patients and develop care plans, and assist leadership in strategic planning to build out a program 

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:  

  1. Demonstrates clinical expertise and utilizes advanced assessment skills in areas of clinical specialty to  propose intervention and/or action plan utilizing evidence-based research to achieve positive outcomes 

for patients and families.  

  1. Prioritizes and evaluates patient/family progress towards health outcome achievement utilizing a  multidisciplinary approach.  
  2. Provides culturally appropriate health promotion and disease/injury prevention strategies based on age, learning theory, epidemiological principles, developmental levels, learning needs, readiness, and ability to learn.  
  3. Coordinates the development of evidenced-based practice protocols and standards of care that include interventions and treatments to achieve desired outcomes, including clinical, financial, and patient/family  satisfaction.  
  4. Analyzes patterns of variance in practice making recommendations for evidence-based changes to  improve patient outcomes utilizing a multidisciplinary approach.  
  5. Facilitates and coordinates/participates in formal or informal educational programs which include  mentoring.  
  6. Identifies educational needs of patients/families and collaborates with other multidisciplinary team  members to develop programs and teaching materials.  
  7. Serves as a clinical resource person to nursing staff, patients/families, and other multidisciplinary team  members across the continuum to evaluate complex patients and identify appropriate desired outcomes  and interventions.  
  8. Evaluates protocols and standards of care in light of current research findings related to specialty area.  10. Utilizes and disseminates relevant research findings through clinical practice, education or  consultation.  

DBS & Movement Disorder Clinical Management Job Functions:  

  1. Part of the Leadership team responsible for the creation of the DBS & Movement Disorder specialty for  the Medical Center. 
  2. Practices as an autonomous and collaborative member of the health care team, demonstrating and  teaching clinical expertise, differentiating between normal findings and those needing treatment, referral  and or consultation. 
  3. Provides leadership of neurosurgical services team. Collaborates with clinicians to recruit top talent.  Creates an environment that fosters team engagement to retain top talent. Maintains a competent team  via education and EBP research activities. Evaluates team member performance daily through coaching  and annually through formal performance assessment process. 
  4. Manages team schedule and payroll. 
  5. Manages the care of the high-risk DBS and movement disorder patients in collaboration with the multi disciplinary team.  
  6. Coordinates people, places and products to provide clinical guidance and specialty leadership through  participation and/or representation at unit, departmental and hospital meetings, committees, councils, task forces, health fairs, educational presentations and multi-disciplinary rounds, as needed. 7. Participates in strategic planning and development of the DBS & Movement Disorder Program in  alignment with long term development goals of a growing neurosciences department.  8. Collaborates with clinicians to ensure correct re-imbursement and budget adherence. Promotes cost  effective use of organizational resources, consistently supporting budget objectives. Facilitates 

implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of action plans aimed to correct budget variances. 9. Develops educational resource materials independently and in collaboration with other health care  providers. Functions as a mentor, educational resource, consultant, for staff providing clinical expertise.  Serves as a resource and support person for movement disorder patients and their family members both  in the acute care setting and in the community. Works in conjunction with Nursing and Departmental  Education to ensure clinical competency for all staff caring for ventricular assist device patients.  10. Participates in the development and recommendation of evidence-based practice identifying the goal  and desired measurable outcomes, which may include clinical, financial, process/system and  patient/family satisfaction. 

  1. Explores opportunities to expand the existing scope of services to grow revenue and improve quality  care delivery in alignment with the Medical Center¿s strategic vision.  
  2. Manages time and resources effectively by managing multiple priorities with appropriate delegation.  13. Develops, implements, and supports activities and/or projects that promote patient satisfaction within  the Office of Human Experience framework to achieve best practice targets. 
  3. Assists the Neuroscience leadership team to develop, manage, and submit business plans and  milestones. 

APN Job Functions:  

  1. Ongoing assessment, management and education of complex Deep Brain Stimulation and movement  disorder patients. 
  2. Assessment, management and oversight of care of post-operative DBS patients. 3. Participate in pre-operative planning and post-operative management programming care.  4. Maintain clinical expertise in deep brain stimulation indications, such as Parkinson¿s disease, Essential tremor,  

 dystonia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Epilepsy.  

  1. Screen referrals, communicate with physicians regarding new patients, and refer as needed. 6. Provide coordination of care with other disciplines, other physicians, and other programs for complex  group of  

 neurophysiology patients. 

  1. Provide consultation regarding clinical situations. 
  2. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 
  3. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. 
  4. Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 25 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a  day.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

  1. Graduate of NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing 
  2. Master's Degree 
  3. >5 years of Experience as an APN 
  4. >5 Years of Experience in Neuroscience specialty

 

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  1. Advance Practice Nurse License.  
  2. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.  
  3. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.  
  4. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
