The Therapy Physics Assistant supports the clinical physics team in performing quality assurance (QA) tasks within the Radiation Oncology Department, including, but not limited to, patient-specific IMRT QA, routine linear accelerator QA, CT QA, and in-vivo dosimetry QA. This role also supports the physics and radiation oncology group with clinical and administrative tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Therapy Physics Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Supports clinical physics team in performing quality assurance (QA) tasks within the Radiation Oncology Department
  • Performs measurement and documentation for patient-specific IMRT measurements and notifies assigned physicist of relevant results.
  • Performs routine monthly linear accelerator QA tasks including, but not limited to, mechanicals, imaging system, MLC, and TG-119 QA. Provides regular updates, documentation, and notification of relevant results to assigned machine QA physicist.
  • Performs routine monthly computed tomography QA tasks for all assigned locations, including, but not limited to, image quality, laser alignment and mechanical checks.
  • Performs routine monthly in-vivo dosimetry QA, measuring and documenting comparison of measured and expected dose.
  • Supports physics team in performing clinical patient treatment tasks.
  • Recoves in-vivo dosimeters and perform measurement readout for the dosimeters.
  • Assists clinical physics staff with image fusion review and documentation.9. Assists clinical physics staff with related tasks for patients undergoing Total Body Irradiation.
  • Assists clinical physics staff with related tasks for patients undergoing Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.
  • Assists with the collection, distribution and documentation of personal dosimetry badges for all staff requiring personal dosimeters.
  • Assists with schedule and documentation of important departmental operations meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics or related field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.
  • Analytical and critical thinking ability is required to troubleshoot issues with the machine.
  • Ability to stay organized in a complex patient care environment and meet required deadlines.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential information. Requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to think independently, anticipate needs, and take initiative.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Master's degree in physics or related field.
