The Radiologic Technologist II obtains specialized radiographic images according to established procedures for medical interpretation.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Radiology Technologist II at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

 

1. Assists physicians during special exams, following instruction and anticipating their needs.
2. Prepares room for exam, setting out trays and accessories required for each special exam.  All required items are ready at the procedure's designated time slot.
3. Anticipates procedure's needs, follows physician's explicit instructions, and positions patient, as requested.
4. Access omnicell and select correct guidewires and catheters for each specific examination.
5. Purges outdated equipment on a monthly basis according to department policy.
6. Rotates perishable inventory on a monthly basis.
7. Informs Chief Radiologic Technologist, daily, of depleted special stock to enable par level maintenance.
8. Evaluates for cost efficiency, physician's wishes for new special procedures equipment and recommends to chief technologist.
9. Responsible for performing special procedures requiring aseptic techniques.
10. Uses established guidelines pertaining to sterile techniques in O.R. and special procedures for each exam.
11. Functions as supervisor in management's absence.
12. Designates duties to appropriate radiology personnel, as needed and instructs staff members in new procedures, as requested.
13. Maintains proper patient flow to lessen patient waiting time in the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
14. Responsible for obtaining radiographic images and positioning all fluoroscopic equipment.
15. Aligns all ionizing radiation equipment and body parts to produce acceptable radiographic images for each specified exam.
16. Programs and positions various fluoroscopic equipment to enable live imaging of specified body parts, as directed.
17. Minimizes patients' radiographic exposures.
18. Selects proper radiographic technique according to policy for each patient exam.
19. Selects proper collimating for all radiographs.
20. Properly uses gonadal shielding for every patient in reproductive age range.
21. Responsibility for patient safety.
22. Performs all imaging procedures in a reasonable time frame, within 10 to 15 minutes upon entering the department, minimizing exposure according to policy and procedure.
23. Assists patients to and from radiographic apparatus for each specified exam.
24. Maintains work area in an orderly fashion removing possible obstacles prior to the start of each procedure.
25. Selection and preparation of contrast for radiographic procedures.
26. Determines proper contrast media for specific exams.
27. Prepares contrast media in proper dosage in accordance with physician's directives.
28. Responsible for assisting physicians with special exams.
29. Aligns patients to facilitate performance of radiographic procedures according to established department protocols.
30. Follows, explicitly, the orders of the physician performing specific exams while maintaining patient safety according to policy and procedure.
31. Anticipates physician needs during exams.
32. Maintains a working knowledge of Picture, Archiving and Communication System (PACS) designed for the acquisition, transmission, display, storage/archival, and retrieval of digital medical images.
33. Validates patient, accession number and exam format, assigning this information prior to the image being moved into the PACS system database.
34. Processes imaging cassettes by means of a single or multi computer reader for quality assurance and post processing of images.
35. Maintains cassettes in a clean, artifact free manner by cleaning surfaces and screens with appropriate materials.
36. Previews image after it has been scanned/processed.  Check patient positioning, collimation border detection and overall processing quality before a softcopy is transmitted to PACS station.
37. Verifies all images on PACS to enable distribution to all users and timely reporting.
38. Accesses patient database, retrieve and make hard copy of images as requested.
39. Capture stored fluoroscopic images from stationary or mobile units and send to PACS system database following procedure.
40. Responsible for proper identification on all diagnostic images.
41. Prior to x-ray exposure lead markers indicating correct body sides are accurately placed on cassettes for each exam to prevent repeat exams, misreadings, or delayed reporting.
42. Monitors RMS computer system to expedite performing and interpretation of patient examination.
43. All completed radiological procedures are tracked to end. Procedure to enable timeliness of reporting
44. Responsible for equipment maintenance.
45. Provides routine cleaning and adjustments on all equipment in his/her designated areas, daily.
46. Inspects all radiographic equipment daily, and reports any potentially dangerous situations.
47. Related Duties include providing competent assessment, treatment and/or care to patients appropriate for the individualized and developmental needs for the ages of those patients served.
48. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
49. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Graduate of a recognized school of radiologic technology.
3. Minimum of three years of clinical experience, including all mobile radiographic or fluoroscopic equipment used in surgical suites.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. NJ State X-Ray Technologist License or Diagnostic Radiography License or NJ Registered Radiological Technologist License.
